Work Hours

56 hours a week on average for a 24/48 schedule
42 hours a week on average for 12-hr 2/2/3 schedule

Salary Information

EMTs beginning rate: $45,560.32 (increases based on certifications and experience)
AEMTs beginning rate: $49,653.76 (increases based on certifications and experience)
Paramedics beginning rate: $62,266.88 (increases based on certifications and experience)

EMT and AEMT training must be completed prior to starting paramedic training.

Requirements for prospective EMS applicants

A high school diploma or GED certificate, and successfully complete an EMT, AEMT, or Paramedic program that meets or exceeds the United States Department of Transportation and State of Tennessee requirements.

A valid Tennessee driver’s license with F endorsement and excellent driving record.

Current BLS Healthcare provider level certification.

Paramedics must also complete Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS), Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS), and Pre-Hospital Trauma Life Support (PHTLS).

Pass BCEMS physical ability test, oral interview and written exam.

All employment is pending a negative drug screen, a background check, and a medical statement from a physician.
